NBC Off to Modest Start after Olympic Hype

NBC's massive promotion of new series during the Summer Olympics hasn't translated into big ratings for the opening of its 2004-05 season.

Two new shows, the animated comedy "Father of the Pride" and cop drama "Hawaii," have generated modest numbers in their premieres. Returning series, including "Fear Factor" and "Scrubs," also struggled, delivering lower numbers than in previous years.

Both new series won or tied for the lead in their time periods among adults 18-49, the demographic NBC uses to measure success, and led among total viewers. But both also faced less than full competition, and compared unfavorably to other series premieres on the network in recent years.

"Father of the Pride" fared the best among NBC's premieres. The commercial-free debut, which ran 24 minutes, brought in a 5.4 rating among adults 18-49 and 12.4 million viewers. NBC says the 18-49 rating is the best for the time period with regular programming since February 2003.

Also on the positive side for NBC is that "Pride" was pretty much a self-starter, doubling the 18-49 rating and adding close to 6 million viewers from its lead-in, "Last Comic Standing." Of course, that also means "LCS" didn't perform very well. (Nor did the extended season premiere of "Scrubs," which followed "Pride" with 8.5 million viewers and a 3.9 in adults 18-49.)

Still, "Father of the Pride's" debut ratings put it behind the premieres of such little-remembered fare as "Stark Raving Mad" and "Inside Schwartz." It will need to sustain most of its debut audience into the season to be considered a success.

With "Hawaii" (10.9 million viewers), NBC is stressing that its 3.3 adults 18-49 rating was the best in the 8 p.m. Wednesday spot since January. That's well below the season premiere of "Ed" (4.1) in the same timeslot last year, however.

The big surprise Wednesday night was the FOX series "Renovate My Family," which combines elements of a number of other makeover shows into one home-image-family-dynamic-improvement show. It was the night's top-rated show among adults 18-49 and built its audience in each half-hour of its two-hour debut.
